Sofia Toribio was born in Villa Maria, Cordoba, Argentina on July 9, 1987. She studied at National University of Cordoba, Argentina, where she recieved a Bachelor of Fine Art degree (Painting). She always had a close relationship with art in general; her mother was a painter and her father an audiovisual designer and a journalist. One of her grandmothers was a literature teacher and the other an English teacher and a seamstress. One of her grandfathers was a civil engineer and the other worked and owned a foundry workshop.
Sofia was the first granddaughter in the family, so she was always in touch with adults helping them with their chores, which ended up influencing her life and work.
In 2007 she devoted herself fully to painting. In 2011 she opened her first workshop in the center of her hometown where she painted and taught art. That same year, she won two important awards in Villa Maria: the Artista Villamariense award, awarded by the Museum of Fine Arts F. Bonfiglioli, and the first prize from the School of Fine Arts E. G. Clara.
After the year 2015, she began a series of journeys around Peru. One which stands out is her stay in the artist residency Sachaca Centro de Arte (Amazonas), where she painted several works using natural pigments and her exhibition COLORES DE LA TIERRA in the city of Tarapoto. In 2017 she decided to emigrate. After traveling across several countries, in February 2018 she arrived to Florence, Italy, where she currently lives and works.
Sofia’s roots are very diverse; Piedmontese, Basque, Andalusian, Comechingòn, Criollo and other she have not found yet. On every trip she descovers and puts together one more little piece of her own identity. Throughout her work, the same questions appear again and again. “Who am I?”, ” Where do I come from?”. “How can all these things live within me?”
